More money-grubbing bullshit from a company that just doesn’t get it.

Well, they do get it, in a way. They get that there are people who are willing to shell out all kinds of cash just to lay claim to an M-Dot. They get that it’s not worth building anything worthwhile, not when there’s a fast buck to be made from the gullible. They get that it’s okay to water down the word “Ironman” with the new series of shorter races because it means more cash.

But this will kill the spirit of the thing. This all started with the ban on families running down the chute with finishers, and it’ll keep on going until you can only race Ironman with WTC-approved gear. They’ll suck the life out of this event, the joy, the celebration, the fact that it’s so goddamned hard to do…feh. I did my race, got my finisher’s shirt, and that’s enough. Fuck WTC.

Adam, I’m very certain that I get the essence of your message. Many are inclined to avoid the chain store/restaurant to support the mom-n-pop operation, I do that too. But, isn’t it a corporations very nature to make money? WTC’s got this thing and it’s desired and it’s sort of their mission to make the most of it. The short lived IM Access program was an attempt at that and I find it hard to admonish them for that action. It’s their job. Nothing will go on forever, someday a tattoo parlor will apply their last Harley Davidson logo on some beefy dudes shoulder and an M-dot on some svelte calf – because it seems that both those businesses will have run their course. And, you may be right, the no-fam-in-the-finish-chute and the attempt at IM Access might be looked back upon as the beginning of the end. It’s hard to say, Harley survived AMF. Rather that putting too much energy into strong feelings toward WTC I want to suggest putting you energy towards the mom-n-pop ultradistance tris listed at k226.com. Ian

Ian, it’s one thing to make money by building up a reputation through years of work and goodwill. It’s another to look at one’s target audience and see a bunch of suckers. The thing is that WTC is going to get an easy hundred grand out of IM Access; are they going to use it to make their races better? Or just to line their pockets? I’m betting on the latter.

Thanks for pointing me to k226.com. Looks like Challenge Wanaka is the way to go.

I’ve done 6 WTC IM so far including Kona and I have to admit they do a pretty good job overall. Are they over zealous in their profit making?? Of Yes!! To the point of shame….YES. But that’s what corporation’s do and will do as long as they feel they can ride it out…..however it’s our job as consumers to choose whether to reward these behavior or not. I for one have felt that WTC have cheapened the IM brand over the last several years in their pursuit for profit and am now voting for non WTC races with my money. Sooner or later, it’ll catch up to WTC and they will then adjust to survive. No need to get emotional…..just choose to race at different venues. There are plenty of races to choose from. Try ultras too….can’t get more grassroot than ultrarunning.

I agree with all of the above. WTC was acquired a few years ago by a private equity company. These organizations buy other companies, increase the revenue and profits and sell them to another buyer after a few years. The selling price is usually a multiple of cash flow, so the more cash flow for WTC the more it’s worth when someone else buys it. There are a lot of wealthy folks doing Ironman races these days and this fact is not lost on WTC. The more they can squeeze from their target audience the more money they make when it’s sold. It’s just business.
